Our heritage

From a pioneer of veterinary MRI to the team you trust today

Sage Teleradiology began in 2001 as MRI Vets, founded by Dr. Patrick R. Gavin, DVM, PhD, DACVR/RO —a pioneer of veterinary MRI at Washington State University and author of the textbook Practical Small Animal MRI. At a time when cross-sectional imaging was just entering veterinary medicine, Dr. Gavin helped define how it should be done.

Over five years, Dr. Gavin mentored Dr. Jaime Sage, passing on a discipline built around one principle: an imaging report should answer the clinical question and tell the surgeon exactly what they need to know. Dr. Sage co-founded Sage Teleradiology with James Collins to carry that legacy forward—a larger team of board-certified radiologists serving referring veterinarians and specialty hospitals nationwide.

1947–2019 · Founder, MRI Vets

A pioneer of veterinary MRI, Dr. Gavin taught at Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine for 29 years, chaired its Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, authored more than 200 scientific papers, and wrote the original textbook Practical Small Animal MRI. He was board-certified by the ACVR and a charter diplomate of its Radiation Oncology subspecialty.

In retirement he founded MRI Vets, reading MRI studies for animals around the world—the practice that became Sage Teleradiology. He mentored generations of students, residents, and radiologists, including Dr. Jaime Sage, and his standard for what an imaging report should be still guides every case we read.
